Cockermouth, England Hardest Hit by Heavy Floods

Cockermouth, England – Heavy floods on Friday, as deep as 8 feet swamped
northern England’s Picturesque Lake District. Dozens of people were
winched to safety by helicopters, while dozens more were rescued by
emergency workers in inflatable boats.
British soldiers conducted house-to-house searches for any victims that
might still be trapped by the flood waters. Over 200 residents were
rescued from the hardest  hit area of Cockermouth. Police in the northern
region of Cumbria said that at least 960 homes were flooded. By late
Friday, the rain had stopped and the water levels started to decrease
allowing rescue workers to search for any remaining victims.
Forecasters said the rainfall was unprecedented. The Environment Agency
recorded 12.3 inches (314.4 millimeter) of rain in 24 hours in one spot,
it was one of the wettest days ever recorded in England.
